@Nichole, for the black around my island,I painted Beadboard Black, and then put it up - You can use a glue for paneling or small nails, I think we did both. Then I put Molding (painted Black) around the bottom. Good Question, I See I didn't put that How-to anywhere!

@lajunk- I didn't do anything with the insides of the drawers or cupboards, besides paint the backsides of the doors, to match the front sides. The actual insides of my drawers and cupboards are white and didn't need anything done. (Thank Heaven!)

Hi J, really love the new look of the kitchen. I would love to do this to mine (once the sale of the house goes through). The kitchen i the new house looks a lot like your old look and I'm jonesin for some pretty while french cabinets.
Was wondering if you could provide an estimate of what the total kitchen make-over cost. Ours is about the same size so it'll give us an idea.
Also - how are the cabinets holding up? Is the paint sturdy and wash well?

@Tara @ the Butter Dish, I'm not sure if you want an estimate of just the cupboards, or more than that, but here's what I Figure: For the Cupboards, I had to buy Paint, primer, sandpaper, caulk, glue, glaze, poly acrylic, paint brushes,and the beadboard, and hardware (the most expensive part!)- I would think around the $200-250 area. I'd be shocked if it were over $300.
The Brick backsplash was about another $100 (bricks + supplies) on top of that.
The Paint/Cupboards have held up wonderfully. Definitely make sure to put a couple of clear coats of the poly acrylic on the top, but they wash well, and definitely get a work out from our Family!

Just bought our first house, but scared to redo anything because I think I'll mess it up, and make things uglier. I think your blog just became my new best friend!

@Rebecca_H22, You Won't Make it Uglier! Its Takes a lot of planning, and thinking, and then when you get tired of planning and thinking, you just gotta muster Your Courage and Do It! Good Luck!!
@Jenn's Paper Crafts, I Would Put the Glaze along the Trim/Edge where I wanted it, with a foam paint brush, so it wasn't all even, or just on the edge, it was quite a bit more than the edge that I would end up getting. Then I took a paper towel, around my finger tip, and very careful went along the edge and wiped off the excess, and helped kind of guide the glaze to the edge like I wanted. This is probably a horrible description, but hopefully it somewhat makes sense. If you wet the papertowel just a little, it will help to clean up the excess, too. Wow, I hope that is somewhat helpful!
Thanks for your help! I'm no where near glazing yet but wanted to get an idea of how to do it. I'm still priming and sanding lol.. Now we are supposed to get 5 days of RAIN!!! So that is going to set me back a week almost :(

@ Janet and JillK, I used Latex paint, with a couple coats of clear polycrylic, and it has held up very well. No complaints or problems!

@Hoots, the color I painted my table is called "Heirloom Red" by Valspar. I didn't paint my chairs, I bought them. Yah. Sometimes I get a little lazy, too! Good Luck!

@Jen-Ben, I used a paint brush for the primer, but a foam roller brush for all the coats and layers after that. The foam roller gives a great smooth finish and gets in cracks really good!

Question. I read your post on your cabinets and how you caulked around the edges of the bead board, but did you do the same thing around the peninsula? We just added the bead board to ours last night and are also painting it black, so I'm curious if you caulked and if the white caulking shows through the black paint.
@Simmonsfamily, I did not caulk around my bead board on the peninsula. It would't hurt, though. They do sell caulk in black, if you are worried about the white showing through, I'd give that a try!

I found your blog and this remarkable makeover via Pinterest while looking for remodeling ideas for our recently purchased "new to us" Class A motorhome. Our MH is decorated in mid-90's ugly (with lots of blue ~ yuck!) and I desperately want to renovate it and make it homey before we take her out for the first time (Spring break 2013).
Thanks for the ideas and inspiration to take on the total remodel of our 36' MH. Also, thanks for giving the paint and tint colors you used.
One question ~ why did you use satin finish on the table and the black paint around the peninsula but used semi-gloss with the white paint for the cabinets?

So warm, cozy and inviting! You did an amazing job. As for paint color, I saw you listed everything but the specific black that was used on the base of the peninsula. Also, did you do that same black for all of your baseboards throughout kitchen and dining? Really love it and thank you for all of your inspiration. I'm not entirely creative so have to use the creativity of others. :)

Your old kitchen looks exactly like ours does now. I love what you did. I having trouble finding the walk through on the kitchen cabinets. How you did the bead board and the distressing. Can you point me in the right direction?
@Lavendar Lone Star,how did the MH make over go? I had a friend who redid hers- that's a lot of hard work in a small space!
I guess I used different finishes, (satin on some things and semi-gloss on others) because I like some things to "shine" more than others. I usually go for satin on furniture pieces, because I don't feel like furniture should be shiny- I perfer them to be a wee bit more dull. I used semi gloss on my cabinets so that they would look more sleek.

@Nikki, the black paint I used was called Black Kettle by Valspar. I have black baseboards around the penninsula, black kick plates under the cupboards, but all my baseboards otherwise are white.
@Steph, I believe what I spent on the cupboards and the brick backsplash and supplies was under $500. About $200-250 for the cupboards, $100 for the brick area. The floor is something we put on the whole first level of our home.

I did a little research, looked at your peninsula post and found the Black Kettle color listed there...then felt a bit bad for asking a question that was answered in another post! :) It's my first time completely making over an entire room and the choice in shades of a color are a bit overwhelming! It just helps knowing what some will look like in a big space once they're put on. Thanks again for answering! :)
I can't thank you enough. My husband and I lived with 9 color swatches on the living room wall for 2 years before we could agree. That being said, I told my friends about my idea of painting the kitchen cabinets white, but husband was really balking at the idea (there will be brush strokes he said). They said lets look at pinterest and viola there you and your beautiful kitchen were. I showed my hubs and for the first time EVER he said "oh, I like that." There was not one thing about your kitchen he did not like. Long story somewhat shortened, I purchased everything on your list yesterday at Lowes!!! I'm so excited (and scared), thanks again for your inspiration...finally something we agree on, something we can afford, and something (hopefully) I can actually do.
